In Camden Joy's second novel, the narrator -- named Camden Joy -- is a
drummer with an
alternative rock band that bears an uncanny resemblance to the real-life
group Cracker (a group the author once traveled with), even down to the
group's lead singer, a character named David Lowery.
Boy Island follows the travails of Lowery as he takes a new
band (Camper Van Beethoven) on the road. There is an intelligence to
some
of Boy Island's commentaries and a lurid, behind-the-scenes
voyeurism to
the book as it follows a group of young men growing up on tour,
including
one band member's coming to terms with his bisexuality.
